When to Start Grooming a Puppy

The Grooming Team19 May 2026

One of the most common questions we hear from new puppy owners is when to book that first groom. The short answer is earlier than most people think. Getting a puppy comfortable with grooming while they are young pays off for the rest of their life.

Start with short, positive visits

A puppy's first visit to the salon does not need to be a full groom. A gentle introduction — a bath, a brush, the sound of the dryer, and plenty of treats and praise — teaches them that the salon is a calm, friendly place. Those early positive experiences are what shape a relaxed adult dog.

The 12 to 16 week window

Once your puppy has had their final vaccinations, usually around 12 to 16 weeks, they can safely visit the salon. This also lines up with a key socialisation period, so it is an ideal time to introduce grooming alongside other new experiences.

What a first groom involves

We keep first grooms short and low-pressure: a wash, a careful dry, a gentle brush-out, a light tidy, and a nail trim. We are watching how your puppy copes and working at their pace — the goal is a good experience, not a perfect haircut.

Keeping it stress-free at home

You can help between visits by handling your puppy's paws, ears and face regularly, and brushing little and often so it becomes part of normal life. A puppy who is used to being touched and brushed at home settles much faster in the salon.
