5 Tips for a Greener Lawn This Spring

The Maintenance Team19 May 2026

Spring is when Hills District lawns do most of their growing — and a few well-timed jobs now set the tone for the whole season. Here are the five things our crews focus on when we bring a tired lawn back to life.

1. Feed it early

A spring fertiliser application gives your lawn the nitrogen it needs to thicken up before the summer heat arrives. Use a slow-release product and water it in well. Feeding early also helps the grass out-compete weeds before they get a foothold.

2. Mow high, and mow often

Cutting too short scalps the lawn and lets sunlight reach weed seeds. Keep your mower on one of its higher settings and mow little and often — never removing more than a third of the leaf in a single pass. Longer grass shades the soil and holds moisture.

3. Water deeply, less often

A long, infrequent soak encourages roots to grow downwards, which makes the lawn far more resilient in a dry spell. Light daily sprinkles do the opposite and keep roots shallow. Early morning is the best time, so the leaf dries off before evening.

4. Tackle weeds before they seed

One weed left to flower becomes hundreds next season. Spring is the window to get on top of bindii, clover and winter grass while they are still small. Spot-spraying or hand-weeding now saves a much bigger job later.

5. Aerate compacted soil

If your lawn sits on heavy clay or gets a lot of foot traffic, the soil compacts and water simply runs off. Aerating opens it up so air, water and nutrients reach the roots — often the missing piece when a lawn just will not thicken up.
