Choosing the Right EV Charger for Your Home

The Electrical Team19 May 2026

A home charger is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade for any EV owner — no more public-charger queues, and you wake up to a full battery every morning. But the options can be confusing, so here is what actually matters when choosing one.

7kW vs 22kW: what actually matters

Most Sydney homes have a single-phase supply, which caps a home charger at around 7kW — still enough to fully charge almost any EV overnight. A 22kW charger needs three-phase power, which many homes do not have. Unless you are charging several vehicles, 7kW is the right choice for the vast majority of households.

Check your switchboard first

A charger draws a steady, significant load, so your switchboard and supply need to handle it. Older boards sometimes need an upgrade, and the charger requires its own dedicated circuit and protection. This is exactly what we assess before quoting — it is not always obvious from the outside.

Tethered or untethered?

A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached, which is convenient for everyday use. An untethered unit has just a socket, so you use your own portable cable and the unit stays tidier. Both are good options; it mostly comes down to preference and where the charger is mounted.

Why a licensed install matters

An EV charger must be installed by a licensed electrician, and in NSW the work comes with a Certificate of Compliance. Beyond the legal side, a proper installation protects your home's wiring and often keeps you eligible for available rebates. It is not a DIY job.
